今年もいよいよ残り1ヶ月となり、何かと気ぜわしい毎日かと存じます。

今回皆様をお迎えいたしますのは、「文王呂尚・虎渓三笑図」屏風でございます。

With only one month remaining, we are sure this finds you all busy trying to wrap things up for the year.

To welcome visitors to our latest exhibition, we are currently displaying a pair of folding screens called

The Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine・King Wen Meets Fisherman Lu Shang.

こちらの屏風は左隻・右隻にそれぞれ中国の故事が描かれています。

左隻には文王と呂尚の出会いの場面が描かれています。

周の文王は、紂王との戦いに備えてすぐれた軍師を探し求めていました。そんな文王の目にとまったのが呂尚でした。呂尚は「太公望」ともいわれますが、太公望とは文王の祖父である「太公」が長らく待ち「望」んでいた周の中国統一を実現する人という意味がございます。

現在、「太公望」というと「釣り好きの人」の代名詞となっていますが、これは釣りをしていた太公望呂尚が文王に見いだされたという故事にもとづいています。

Each of the screens in this pair each depict a story from ancient China.

The left screen depicts the encounter of King Wen and Lu Shang. King Wen went in search of a military strategist to advise him in his struggle against King Zhou of Shang, and Lu Shang caught his attention. King Wen's grandfather, Grand Duke Danfu, advised him to seek out talented advisors to help him unify China under the Zhou Dynasty, which Lu Shang did, leading him to be called Taigong Wang, or "the man the Grand Duke hoped for".

In modern Japanese, "Tiagong Wang" is pronounced "Taikōbō", and is used as a nickname for someone who likes fishing, which is based in this story from ancient China when Tiangong Wang was spotted fishing by King Wen.

右隻には「虎渓三笑」の故事が描かれています。

中国浄土教の開祖で廬山の主である慧遠法師は、来客を見送る際は山の麓の虎渓という谷川に架かる橋を渡らないという戒律を守っていました。ところがある日、儒教の高僧、陶淵明と道教の高僧、陸修静を見送った時、話に夢中になり虎渓を越えてしまい、虎の吠える声を聞いて初めてそれと気づき三人で大笑いをしたそうです。

儒教・仏教・道教における３人の賢者がおしゃべりに夢中のあまり“気がつくと思いも掛けないところまで来ていた”というお話です。

The right screen depicts The Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine.

Huiyuan, the founder of the Pure Land sect in China who established his temple on Mount Lu, took a vow to never cross the river flowing through Tiger Ravine, which flowed at the base of the mountain. One day, however, when he was visited by the Confucian government official Tao Yuanming and the Taoist scholar Lu Xiujing, the three became so immersed in conversation that Huiyuan inadvertently crossed the river as he was seeing his friends off. The roar of a tiger startled them out of their discussion, and realizing where they were, the three burst into raucous laughter.

It is the story of three wise men from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism so engaged in discussion that they were brought to an unexpected place.

その他、「勢至菩薩坐像」や「金銀交書経」などを展示しております。

Also on display is a sculpture of Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta), and a sutra fragment with alternating lines of gold and silver script.
