展示替えのお知らせ【白金】 ～2020.3.21

New Exhibition in Shirokane, until March 21, 2020

今回皆様をお迎えいたしますのは、初お目見えとなる曾我蕭白(1730-1781)筆「富士三保松原図屏風」でございます。

Welcoming visitors to the gallery this time is a pair of screens by Soga Shohaku (1730-1781) Mount Fuji and Miho no Matsubara, being exhibited here for the first time.

蕭白は京都に生まれ、高田敬輔に師事し、雲谷派にも影響を受けたとされています。
18世紀半ばから後半にかけての京都画壇は、池大雅、与謝蕪村、伊藤若冲、円山応挙など、際立った個性を発揮して競い合う革新的な画家が相継いで現れた時代です。
その中でも蕭白は奇矯なデフォルメや強烈な色彩、あくの強い奔放さを特徴としておりました。

本作は左隻に富士の孤峰、右隻に水平に長く伸びる三保松原を配す典型的な富士三保松原図屏風でございます。
しかし、一般的な構図に加え、左隻の漁師の姿や右隻の竜など本屏風には多様なモチーフが描かれ蕭白らしさが表れています。

同じ画題の富士三保松原図屏風（MIHO MUSEUM所蔵、旧パワーズコレクション）がございますが、そちらには右隻に竜ではなく虹が描かれております。

Shohaku was born in Kyoto, is said to have first studied painting under Takada Keiho (1674-1755), and also seems to have been influenced by the Unkoku school. He was active in the second half of the 18th century, when innovative and original painters like Ike Taiga, Yosa Buson, Ito Jakuchu, and Maruyama Okyo emerged with unique styles. Among them, Shohaku is particularly known for his eccentric renditions of common themes, bold use of color, and idiosyncratic character.

Typical of screens on this subject, the right screen features Miho no Matsubara, with its outstretched shore lined with pine trees, and the left screen features a powerful rendering of Mount Fuji. Unlike the usual depictions of this subject, however, Shohaku has added a number of fishermen to the scene, and a dragon ascending in a stormy cloud. Another pair of screens on this subject by Shohaku in the Miho Museum (former Kimiko and John Powers Collection) do not feature a dragon, but rather a large rainbow arching over Miho no Matsubara.

両画面に描かれる山並みはまるで氷山のような異形な形態で、さながら南極のようでもございますが、白・灰色を交互に配し反復させた山々には、どこか生き物めいた表情さえ見えてまいります。

迫力満点でありながら、どこか幻想的な光景はとても引き込まれる魅力がございます！

Unusually shaped mountains reminiscent of icebergs appear in both screens, making it look like a scene from the South Pole. Signs of life can be seen here and there, however, in their alternating white and grey forms. It is an impressive work with a fantastical air that truly captures the imagination.
